Heritage Award 2010
Fifth Class

Congratulations to 5th class, who recently won first prize in the Heritage in Schools’ Competition for their project entitled; A History of Greenmount School.

The class used old photographs to investigate the 156 year history of our school. They also interviewed people from the photographs who helped them piece together the many parts of our school’s history

Using the old photographs of our school grounds, the class took an investigative walk with the help of local historian, Plunkett Carter. On the walk, the class identified where buildings were situated, such as, St. Patrick’s Orphanage, St. Joseph’s Industrial School and the Gallows Green. Many of these buildings are long since gone and replaced with modern housing but our original school building still stands proudly adjacent to our current school. It is now home to The Lough Community Centre.

The project was a lot of hard work but it was very exciting for the class to discover and investigate their school’s history for themselves. By interviewing those who have been involved with the school over the years, it really helped the class see what life in our school was like over the years

5th class were proud to accept their award at the Silversprings Hotel award ceremony in April. They proudly launched their project at a school Grandparents’ Day and that evening, they graced the front page of The Evening Echo.
Congratulations 5th Class!
