Gallows Green
Greenmount
Street~Terrace Names
Second Class 2006

Greenmount was known as Gallows Green because hangings and other punishments were carried out here.

We walked around the triangle of land where the gallows were and wrote down the street and terrace names.

We found 3 saints, Mary, Joseph and Finnbarr.

Ard Na Croiche is on 2 name plates. 4 streets had Greenmout on them. The main street name is Gould Street. We found no Gallows Green.

One cresnt of houses is called entenary rescent, 1898. The name is in memory of the 1798 rebellion agianst English rule. The rebellion failed and 15 men were hanged at Gallows Green .

When the Presentation Brothers came to Gallows Green they decided to change the name to Greenmount. It would not be nice to build a school ata a placw called after hanging people.

Later Cork Corporation named new steets in the area in honour of the Presentation Brothers. That is another story.

Daria, Sarah, Cian, Karen, Zack, Jade, Amy, Natasha and Airidas, Second Class 2006, typed this story.
