World Book Week 2001
Class Displays

To mark World Book Day on March 1st 2001, all the classes were encouraged to contribute to the book display in the school hall. All the classes celebrated the event in a variety of ways.

One Junior Infants class illustrated their favourite Fairy Tale, while the other Junior Infants class compiled a beautiful collage of the story of St. Bridgid. Children in the Language class made a Big, Big Book of animals and their babies.

Each child in Third class picked a poem, which they then typed into the computer. After they were printed, they illustrated them. Finally, they were mounted on chart paper for display. A copy of all the poems was bound and will be kept in the classroom

LOCKIE and DADGE

Having read the novel "Lockie and Dadge" by Frank Murphy, Fifth class decided to produce their own books - 1 large and 1 A4 size to reflect aspects of the novel.

Both books contain;
Acrostics on the main characters.
Newspaper notices - regarding Lockie.
Diary extracts of favourite chapters.
A Cartoon strip summarising the novel.
Various drawings of scenes from the story complete the children's book.

The students in Rang V1 compiled a project which details the lives of some of the authors of the well-known classics. Even though many of the authors lived in the nineteenth century, we still enjoy their works to this day.

We discovered many interesting facts about these marvelous people. For example, did you know that Lewis Carroll (the author of "Alice in Wonderland") was a professor of Mathematics at Oxford University and that he actually wrote the book for the daughter of a colleague? Or that Alexander Dumas (the author of "The Three Musketeers") employed other young writers to do some of his writing? Or that Charles Dickens' father was imprisoned for not paying his debts?

We look forward to discovering some more interesting facts on other authors in the future.
