How To Play NetChess With Greenmount School Introduction NetChess can only be played while Online or on a Network. For our purposes we will be using it while connected to the Internet. NetChess works using the Internet IP Address of your computer. One school(Server) reads its IP adress and sends it to the other school (Client). There are 2 sets of instructions below, one to use if you are the Server and one to use if you are the Client.
Using NetChess You Are The Server 1. Connect to the Internet at the agreed time, as arranged beforehand.
2. Click on the Start button and Select Run
3. Type - winipcfg - and Click on OK.
4. Note the IP address. Send this immediately by email to - contact@greenmount.ie
5. Find the NetChess Icon on your Desktop and Double Click it to start the program.
6. A Choice Box will open as shown in the image over.
7. Please click in the white circle next to Server as shown over.
8. Click on the 'Connect' button.
9. The Main Chess Screen should now appear. 10. You will be White for the first game. 11. Please do not make a move until your clock changes to 9.59. This is the signal that we are now connected to you.
12. To make a move Click and Hold the chess piece you wish to move. Drag the piece to the new position and release it. If you try to make an illegal move the piece will jump back to its original position.

Using NetChess You Are The Client 1. Connect to the Internet at the agreed time, as arranged beforehand.
2. You should now check your email as you will have been sent an 'IP' address from Greenmount which you will need in step 7 below. Make a note of the 'IP' address.
3. Find the NetChess Icon on your Desktop and Double Click it to start the program.
4. A Choice Box will open as shown in the image over.
5. Please click in the white circle next to Client as shown over. 6. Now highlight the 'IP' address (255.255.255.0) by double clicking in the box where the number is. 7. Now type in the 'IP' address that you got by email from Greenmount.
8. Click on the 'Connect' button.
9. The Main Chess Screen should now appear. 10. Greenmount will be White for the first game so please wait until they make their first move.
12. To make a move Click and Hold the chess piece you wish to move. Drag the piece to the new position and release it. If you try to make an illegal move the piece will jump back to its original position.

Some Features of NetChess 1. The NetChess clock allows each player 10 minutes in which to make all their moves.
2. You can send comments to your opponent by typing in the small dialogue box and pressing the 'Return' key.
3. Netchess shows what is happening in the game in the bottom right hand box.
4. There are also choices to 'Resign', offer a 'Draw' and ask permission to 'take back' a move.
